About the Role
Work within a cross-functional product or platform team across ITV’s User and Payments streaming domains to deliver and support robust, highly scalable microservices that meet the high-concurrency needs of ITV’s Streaming business (ITVX). At the Core level, you will focus deeply on the craft of software development, contributing independently to feature slices while actively collaborating with team members and building knowledge of domain architecture.
Key responsibilities include writing high-quality, clean, well-tested, and idiomatic functional code primarily in Scala. You will ensure all features include unit and integration tests to validate correct functioning and that code is peer-reviewed through constructive Pull Requests. You will actively participate in reviewing the work of others to catch defects and uphold standards. The role involves moving assignments smoothly from requirements definition through design to clean implementation deployed in production.
As a team and community member, you will engage and collaborate with cross-functional agile teams including front-end developers, Product Managers, Agile Delivery Managers, and designers. You will participate in sizing, backlog refinement, story breaking, and design sessions to define pragmatic technical solutions, negotiating MVPs rather than building over-engineered features under time constraints. You will actively participate in the wider Scala/Backend Engineering community of practice through knowledge sharing such as lightning talks or pairing, and support junior team members or apprentices to help them improve their skills.
In operations and support, you will take a proactive stance toward operational health and observability by incorporating metrics collection and alerting, make use of feature flags where appropriate, and participate in daytime office-hours support rotas to maintain live service health. You will also participate in the mandatory out-of-hours/on-call rotation.
Experience
- Confident Scala programming experience (commercial or equivalent diverse codebase experience)
- Strong grasp of automated testing patterns including unit testing and integration checking
- Experience with distributed version control systems (Git)
- Familiarity with Functional Programming concepts such as immutability, referential transparency, and algebraic design
- Knowledge of web services architecture (REST, HTTP stack, JSON codecs)
- Familiarity with message brokers/event-driven boundaries (e.g., Apache Kafka)
- Good understanding of local development tooling and environments
- Experience working with payment platforms such as Stripe, Google Pay, or Apple Pay
- Experience with authentication standards such as OAuth 2.0 and working with JWT tokens
About you
- Collaborative and proactive team player who engages with cross-functional agile teams
- Willingness to participate in knowledge sharing and support junior team members
- Comfortable working in a hybrid environment and participating in support rotas including on-call duties
- Pragmatic problem solver who values delivering MVPs over over-engineered solutions under time constraints
Qualifications
Nice to have, but not essential:
- Exposure to Pure FP ecosystems/libraries (Typelevel Stack, Cats, Cats-Effect) or Tagless Final patterns
- Familiarity with relational databases (e.g., PostgreSQL) or caching stores (e.g., Redis)
- Awareness of containerization (Docker) and basic cloud architecture (AWS)
- Awareness of CI/CD principles and automated integration pipelines (GitHub Actions)
- Some familiarity with performance testing tools such as Gatling
- Familiarity with AI development tools (e.g., Copilot) and AI SDLC methods (e.g., SpecKit)
