This 12-month fixed-term secondment opportunity is within the Specialist Ambulatory Medical Services (SAMS) Directorate. The Deputy Research Manager (Band 7) will gain senior operational and strategic research management experience in a large, high-performing research environment. The role involves leadership of clinical research staff, oversight of research finances and resources, and collaboration with Principal Investigators, clinical teams, Trust R&D, NIHR partners and external collaborators to ensure safe, efficient, and high-quality study delivery.
The post holder will provide strategic and operational leadership for the Directorate’s clinical research portfolio, coordinate research delivery across multiple specialties, and act as a key point of contact for research activity. This role supports the Directorate’s research business plan, embedding robust governance, ensuring compliance with regulatory and Trust policies, and contributing to research sustainability and development.

Experience
- Proven significant experience in clinical research management within an academic or NHS environment
- Direct line management of clinical research staff
- Experience managing departmental budgets, resources and financial reporting
- In-depth knowledge of NHS Research Ethics and R&D approval processes
- Experience writing Research Ethics submissions and clinical research protocols

- Strong leadership and organisational skills with ability to manage multiple workloads and prioritise effectively
- Ability to influence, negotiate and motivate clinicians and staff across disciplines
- Proven track record in developing effective working relationships with colleagues and healthcare professionals at all levels
- Flexible, independent worker with excellent communication skills
Qualifications
- Degree or professional qualification
- Post-graduate qualification in a health science subject
- Desirable: Formal qualification in clinical trial methodology
Desirable Skills and Knowledge
- Experience managing large, multi-centre UK-wide clinical research projects
- Advanced Excel skills including pivot tables
- Knowledge of new national systems and structures for clinical research approval, management and monitoring in the NHS
