About the Role
This position is open exclusively to internal candidates employed by the London Borough of Barnet (LBB). External applications will not be considered. The Strategic Member Advisor will support Barnet's Conservative Group as the main Opposition Group on Barnet Council. The role involves working closely with Senior Members including the Leader of the Opposition, Committee Chairs, and Shadow Cabinet Members, providing comprehensive, high-quality strategic policy advice and support.

The Advisor will assist in the development of policy and strategy, offer policy analysis and advice, shape communications approaches, and provide perspectives on service delivery and policy options, taking into account advice from Executive Directors and senior officers. The post holder will line manage a Political Assistant, ensuring clear role distinctions and compliance.

This role is politically restricted under the Local Government and Housing Act 1989 and does not include provision of political advice or canvassing on behalf of any political party or individual elected member.

Requirements

Experience
Extensive experience working in highly complex and political environments, including research, analysis, and policy briefings within a Local Authority or similar context. Proven ability to work effectively with politicians and senior officers. Experience undertaking complex policy research into local government issues and contributing to the development of Group policy.

About you
Strong knowledge of all aspects of local government organisation and services, with a detailed, up-to-date understanding of local, regional, and national political issues and their impact on the local authority. Ability to provide strategic advice and support in a politically sensitive environment while maintaining professionalism and impartiality.

Qualifications
Specific qualifications are not stated; however, a thorough understanding of local government and political environments is essential. A commitment to the Council’s values and the ability to work within a politically restricted post are required.
