Location
Hampton Coal Wharf, Hybrid working with Clearwater Court, Reading as base location.

Hours
36 hours per week, Monday to Friday. Participation in an out-of-hours on-call rota following probation and prerequisites to provide emergency support for critical OT systems.

Salary
Up to £66,435 per annum, depending on experience. Car allowance of £4,500.

About the Role
As an Operational Technology (OT) Compute System Engineer at Thames Water, you will manage and support OT-specific enterprise systems and applications that are critical to operational technology services for customers and the wider business. Your responsibilities include maintaining compliance, security, and alignment with industry standards across all systems under the compute remit. You will support ongoing maintenance and lifecycle management of OT compute infrastructure, including patching and license management.
Working closely with business stakeholders, you will deliver new technical solutions, including cloud-based technologies, to meet future needs. You will act as a key point of contact for incident response, demonstrating strong problem-solving skills and the ability to act quickly under pressure.
Additional duties include assisting in the design and implementation of infrastructure changes, ensuring system security compliance through audits and proactive management, and supporting regular updates across the full technology stack including applications, OS, BIOS, and hypervisors.
You will administer and support a wide range of enterprise technologies such as Active Directory, SCCM, VMware, Symantec Endpoint Protection, Dell OpenManage Enterprise, Canonical patching tools, NTP, PKI/certificates, and hybrid Azure environments. You will also contribute to the integration and evolution of Industry 4.0 solutions within the OT compute domain.
Collaboration with other technical teams to deliver infrastructure improvements and new deployments is essential, as is staying current with industry best practices and acting as a Subject Matter Expert (SME) within the compute domain. Personal development and training to maintain capability across required technologies are expected.

Requirements

Experience
- Proven experience in maintaining, patching, and supporting infrastructure and enterprise systems.
- Familiarity with enterprise application administration including Active Directory, SCCM, VMware, AV software, and Azure cloud services.
- Knowledge of IP communications and networking, including LAN and WAN.
- Understanding of industry-specific SCADA systems or willingness to learn.
- Proficient scripting skills using PowerShell or similar.
- Experience working within utility industry or large-scale enterprise environments (>20,000 devices) is desirable.
- Experience with stakeholder analysis and managing relationships across multiple technical and business teams.

- Proven decision-making skills balancing operational, commercial, and customer needs.
- Self-motivated, detail-oriented, and able to work under pressure.
- Understanding of IT and OT delivery approaches such as ITIL, Agile, Waterfall, Lean.
- Security clearance to SC level is required; CTC clearance is desirable and will be obtained if not already held.

Qualifications
- Higher education qualification (HNC or equivalent experience) in an engineering or IT discipline.
- Desirable certifications include Microsoft Certified Solutions Associate (MCSA) – Server, SQL, SCCM; Microsoft Applied Skills – Administer Active Directory Domain Services; Microsoft Azure Fundamentals and/or Azure Administrator Certification.
- Experience and certification in scripting and automation using PowerShell.
- VMCE certification or hands-on experience with Veeam Backup & Replication (or similar).
- Symantec Endpoint Protection (SEP) administration certification.
