About the Role
Guy’s and St Thomas’ NHS Foundation Trust is one of the UK’s busiest and most successful NHS trusts, providing a wide range of hospital and community services across south London. The South East London Diabetic Eye Screening Programme (SEL DESP) is one of the largest eye screening programmes in the country, screening over 100,000 patients and working closely with ophthalmology and diabetes services across SE London. We are seeking a confident and organised A&C Band 4 Failsafe Officer to join our Failsafe Team within SEL DESP. This role is not patient-facing and offers the flexibility of remote working once fully trained.
The post holder will ensure a robust, high-quality failsafe system is maintained for this large and complex diabetic retinopathy screening programme. Working closely with the Failsafe Supervisor and the wider team, you will help deliver the service in line with National Screening Committee requirements for the diabetic population across Lambeth, Southwark, Lewisham, Bromley, Bexley, and Greenwich.
Key responsibilities include updating DESP software and trackers with ophthalmology information, ensuring patients are seen within urgent and routine timelines, conducting pathway audits, responding to queries from healthcare professionals, maintaining strong relationships with the Hospital Eye Service, and escalating patients at risk of being lost to follow-up. The role requires attention to detail, problem-solving skills, and the ability to work independently.
The SEL DESP team includes screener graders, specialist optometrists, administrators, and failsafe officers, led by a dedicated management team and Consultant Ophthalmologist. Screening is delivered across hospital outpatient clinics, NHS health centres, and high street opticians, supported by strong academic links within King’s Health Partners.

- Excellent verbal and written communication skills at all levels
- Ability to handle multiple tasks successfully
- Understanding of the importance of failsafe processes in a screening programme
- Confident and able to work independently, taking initiative to identify gaps and solve problems
