Law Commission Law Reform Assistant Lawyer - Commercial and Common Law Team


Location
This is a national role. Successful candidates can work from their nearest regional hub (their “base location”) within the UK. Hybrid working arrangements apply, with an expectation to attend the base location at least 2 days a week and the London office regularly (approximately once a month) for meetings and stakeholder engagement.
Hours
Full-time, with flexible working options including part-time and job-share arrangements available subject to business needs.
Salary
£42,914 per annum, with Ministry of Justice contributing £12,432 towards membership of the Civil Service Defined Benefit Pension scheme.
About the Role
The Law Commission of England and Wales is recruiting Law Reform Assistant Lawyers to join the Commercial and Common Law team. This role offers the opportunity to contribute to high-profile and challenging law reform projects that impact individuals, businesses, and society. The primary focus will be on the upcoming consumer class actions project, with potential involvement in projects on product liability, museum collections, private international law relating to digital assets, trust law arbitration, and reform of deeds law.
Working closely with Professor Solène Rowan, the Law Commissioner responsible for commercial and common law, and a small team, you will engage with a wide range of stakeholders to help ensure the law is modern, fair, and effective.
The role involves legal analysis and drafting, stakeholder engagement, and project management with a degree of independence and leadership. It suits newly qualified lawyers, experienced paralegals or legal researchers, legal policy professionals, or early career academics.

Experience
At least one year’s experience of legal work or policy work with a substantial legal element, gained in the Civil Service, private or in-house legal practice, academia, or the third sector. Experience in interpreting and analysing law and legal policy, and communicating complex legal analysis is essential. Demonstrable understanding of the Commercial and Common Law team’s work and motivation to contribute to law reform is required.
Desirable experience includes relevant skills and achievements related to the main duties, and prior knowledge or experience in class actions, consumer law, or litigation.

Qualifications
You must hold either:
- A minimum 2.1 undergraduate degree in law; or
- A 2.1 undergraduate degree in any subject plus at least two years’ full-time undergraduate or postgraduate study in law (including law conversion and professional legal practice courses such as SQE, GDL, LPC, or BPTC), with substantial additional relevant skills or knowledge.
Equivalent overseas qualifications may be accepted.
By the time the role starts, you must have the required legal or policy experience as above.
