About the Role
If you’re interested in making a difference to people’s lives, HM Treasury offers an exciting opportunity to influence decision making that affects the whole of the UK. Working at the heart of government, you will collaborate across departments to promote responsible public spending and drive strong, sustainable economic growth.

HM Treasury’s work ranges from protecting customers through financial sector regulation, reducing carbon emissions and creating a greener economy, to promoting British trade globally and supporting jobs and growth across the country.

As a Lead Software Developer, you will build modern software applications that enable excellent use of data and information at the core of HM Treasury’s most important business processes, directly supporting public spending decisions and economic and fiscal policy making.

You will lead the design, development, and continuous improvement of digital products used across HM Treasury and wider government. Working with both front-end and back-end technologies, you will create secure, scalable, and user-centred applications that solve real user problems and deliver tangible business value.

You will also promote excellent software development practices across the Data Hub and the wider HM Treasury Coding Community, working closely with Data Scientists and Data Engineers. Your role includes providing technical leadership, supporting capability development, and fostering a culture of software engineering excellence across the department.

Requirements

Experience
- Strong hands-on experience building and supporting software applications across front-end and back-end technologies, including Python frameworks.
- Experience designing secure, scalable, and maintainable solutions using cloud technologies, preferably Azure, but Google or Amazon cloud experience is also valued.
- Proven track record delivering digital products using Agile methodologies, engaging directly with stakeholders, iterating on feedback, and working within multidisciplinary teams.
- Experience providing technical leadership, mentoring team members, and promoting good software engineering practices across teams or organisations.

About you
- Enthusiastic about making a positive impact through technology.
- Committed to fostering a culture of software engineering excellence.
- Skilled at user engagement and applying user-centred design principles.
- Able to lead and inspire teams while managing technical risks and dependencies.
- Interested in innovation and emerging technologies, including generative AI, to improve business processes and user experiences.

Qualifications
- Relevant technical qualifications or demonstrable equivalent experience in software development and engineering.
- Understanding of security standards, operational monitoring, and governance in software design.
- Ability to design scalable software architectures and ensure effective integration across platforms and services.
