About the Role

From Ridley Road to Broadway, these markets host family-run businesses, youth traders, bold startups, and inclusive events.
As a Market Service Officer, you will be the frontline presence ensuring the smooth, safe, and efficient running of vibrant street markets. You will be out on the market for approximately 80% of your trading day, monitoring activities, checking licenses, and ensuring compliance with regulations.
This role offers the chance to shape the future of Hackney’s iconic markets, support hundreds of small businesses, and contribute to the borough’s ongoing economic and cultural success.

Key Responsibilities:
- Supporting Traders: Assist with stall setup and breakdown, and build positive relationships with license holders.
- Ensuring Compliance: Conduct regular checks on stall sizes, commodities, and licenses; advise traders on responsibilities; identify and report breaches; support enforcement action.
- Promoting Growth: Support income-generating activities and identify new trading opportunities.
- Maintaining Standards: Report defects, ensure market cleanliness, and manage public highway obstructions.
- Community Engagement: Be visible and accessible to the public, handle inquiries and complaints, and foster strong community relations.
- Operational Excellence: Manage daily administrative tasks, process payments, and support debt recovery.

The role involves a varied shift pattern including mandatory weekend working (every Saturday and/or Sunday), occasional late nights, and public holidays.
