About the Role
Guy’s and St Thomas’ NHS Foundation Trust is one of the UK’s busiest and most successful NHS trusts, providing a full range of hospital and community services across south London and specialist care for patients from further afield. In 2021, the Royal Brompton and Harefield joined the Trust, creating a world-renowned heart and lung centre.

The Health Informatics Development Team consists of an agile DevOps team focused on IT-enabled change and a DataOps team managing the complex information environment. This senior technical and development lead role is within the DevOps team, which currently has ten members with varying skills.

The role involves working with Microsoft Business Intelligence systems using SQL Server BI stack tools (SSIS, SSAS, SSRS), SharePoint, Power BI, and the Trust’s new EHR system (EPIC). The post holder will utilise the full technology stack including EPIC reporting tools, providing expert advice and guidance in project definition, product design, and development.

Responsibilities include managing development projects to completion, supporting product transition into operation through documentation and training, providing second/third line support, and promoting products across the organisation. The role offers opportunities to develop expertise across a broad and complex technical environment.

Requirements

Experience
- Substantial experience developing systems and processes for large-scale enterprise data warehouses.
- Experience designing and modelling complex datasets and information systems.
- Experience developing Business Intelligence outputs using enterprise BI tools such as Business Objects, MS SSRS, PowerView, Tableau, or QlikView.
- Experience with formal software development and testing methodologies.
- Experience working in controlled change management environments with source code control.
- Experience leading or advising technical and non-technical teams on best practices and innovation.
- Experience researching and implementing best practices for improvement.

Desirable Experience
- Experience with NHS mental health, community, or acute datasets.
- Experience authoring high quality technical and user documentation.
- Experience developing or designing solutions for Microsoft SharePoint.
- Experience in enterprise-level database administration and performance tuning.
- Experience with Epic Cogito suite tools including Caboodle, Clarity, Radar, Reporting Workbench, Data Gateway, and Slicer Dicer.

Qualifications
Essential
- Educated to Masters level in a related discipline or equivalent senior experience in IT, informatics, or related specialist field.
- Additional specialist training.

Desirable
- Specialist training in database administration (Oracle or Microsoft SQL Server).
- Training in Microsoft Active Directory domain environment.
- Training in Microsoft SharePoint administration or development.
- Training in object-oriented programming.
- ITIL Foundation.
- Prince2 Foundation or Practitioner.

Key Skills
- Proficiency in SQL and database management systems (MySQL, PostgreSQL, Oracle, SQL Server).
- Familiarity with cloud databases (AWS RDS, Azure SQL).
- Ability to design normalized, relational, and non-relational databases.
- Knowledge of database encryption, access controls, and security best practices.
- Experience in performance tuning including indexing, caching, and load balancing.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
- Ability to explain complex technical issues to non-technical stakeholders.
- Comprehensive knowledge of Microsoft SQL Server products and services.
- Knowledge of different database schema designs and data modelling principles.
- Use of PowerShell or similar scripting for server service manipulation.
- Programming using T-SQL for database and instance management.
- Use of Microsoft SQL Server Analysis Services and Integration Services.

Desirable Skills
- Understanding of NHS IM&T and information flows.
- Knowledge of IT industry including hardware, software, security, and telecoms.
- Knowledge of Microsoft High Availability technologies.
- Knowledge of XML and XML-based messaging.
