London with regular travel to the Costain Manchester office and London-centric projects. Hybrid working with a minimum of two days per week office-based.

Hours
Full time, with flexibility based on role, client, business and team requirements. Short-term travel to company, supplier or client offices or sites may be required.

About the Role
Costain is expanding its rail sector delivery, working with UK rail clients including Network Rail, HS2, Northern Powerhouse Rail, TfL and East West Rail. We are seeking a Project Engineering Manager (Civil & Structural) to join our Constructability Team within the Engineering Design Services Capability. This role supports secured frameworks, projects and consultancy commissions, managing multi-disciplinary engineering design delivery across the project lifecycle. You will lead and coordinate engineering teams on complex rail projects, ensuring designs are safe-by-design, sustainable, digitally enabled, cost-effective, compliant and technically sound. Responsibilities include managing engineering resources, coordinating interfaces with project partners and supply chain, overseeing contractual communications, risk management, and ensuring compliance with governance and safety standards. You will also support business development activities and mentor junior engineers. This role requires strong client-facing skills and the ability to work collaboratively across disciplines and locations.

Requirements

Experience
- Significant civil and structural design experience in the rail sector, managing multi-disciplinary teams through all project lifecycle stages on major contracts.
- Thorough knowledge of project delivery processes from work winning to handover.
- Strong understanding of UK technical and regulatory standards and global best practices.
- Proven leadership in process safety, quality and environmental management.
- Experience with Project Controls including Schedule, Cost, Risk and Change Management.
- Demonstrated ability to develop and influence client relationships.
- Effective written and verbal communication skills.
- Ability to work regularly from the Costain London office (approx. 40% office-based) and travel as required.

Qualifications
- Honours Degree or equivalent qualification in an engineering-related subject.
- Chartered Engineer status and membership of a professional engineering institution (desirable).
- Association for Project Management qualification (desirable).
