About the Role
Transport for London (TfL) is one of Britain’s key city Local Authorities, responsible for the city’s infrastructure including Highways, Major Structures, Rail, River Transport and supporting technology. Many assets are reaching end-of-life and require substantial remedials or full refurbishment. Costain supports TfL under multiple frameworks and is a major provider, working on exciting projects such as the South Kensington Upgrade and Step Free Access for TfL Rail.
The Senior Environmental Advisor role supports Contract Environmental functions by providing and enabling environmental solutions and assisting Contract and Operational Teams in implementing the Group SHE Management System. The role involves building and maintaining relationships with all stakeholders while providing an independent and objective view of SHE performance on the contract. This position focuses on delivering environmental and sustainability outcomes across the framework and works closely with the Health and Safety function as part of the SHE Team.
Key tasks include on-site support, running sustainable workshops with stakeholders to deliver sustainable outcomes, liaising with clients, supply chain, and contract teams to achieve environmental and sustainability goals, implementing the E&S management system across the framework, and supporting pre-mobilisation activities to ensure environmental assessments and risk reduction measures are in place.
Responsibilities
- Support and influence Contract Leadership Team, Clients, and other stakeholders in compliance with the Group SHE Management System and Contract Environmental Performance
- Deliver or support training to enable contract teams to implement the Group SHE Management System
- Coach and support Contract Operational and Supply Chain Contractors in delivering Contract Environmental requirements
- Participate in ongoing assessment of Contracts Supply Chain Contractors
- Support delivery of annual Contract and Group SHE Objectives
- Engage with Contract Environmental Assurance programme to ensure compliance with company and statutory requirements
- Support investigation of unplanned events and close out assurance findings, sharing lessons learned in accordance with the SHE Management System
- Support timely reporting, analysis, and use of Environmental data to influence Contract Leadership Team and assist in developing data-driven improvement plans
Experience
- Essential: Environmental related experience
- Desirable: Significant relevant environmental experience in the industry

- Strong communicator capable of building and maintaining stakeholder relationships
- Ability to coach and support teams in environmental compliance and sustainability
- Proactive in supporting investigations and assurance processes
- Collaborative team player working closely with Health and Safety functions
Qualifications
- Essential: Environmental Degree or equivalent
- Essential: PIEMA or equivalent (working towards MIEMA/CEnv)
- Desirable: Over 5 years relevant environmental experience in the industry
- Desirable: MIEMA, CEnv or equivalent professional accreditation
