About the Role
Newham Libraries is an ambitious library service dedicated to improving the quality of life for our residents, with increasing visits and book loans year on year. The service works closely with Public Health and other council departments to deliver key priorities such as ensuring our book stock reflects and serves our diverse communities, encouraging Reading for Pleasure for all ages, expanding our Digital Lending offer, enhancing the Summer Reading Challenge, developing our Under 5s programme, and providing a high-quality library experience. With 10 libraries across the borough, we offer extensive opening hours and a wide range of events and activities.
As a Senior Library Assistant at Manor Park Library, you will play a vital role in delivering this vision. Your responsibilities will include assisting customers with transactions, shelving books and creating book displays, providing digital assistance and basic digital skills sessions, offering information and sign-posting services, supporting or running events and activities including Under 5s storytimes, and promoting books and reading. You may also support outreach activities or resident forums. As a duty manager, you will be responsible for opening and closing the building, managing bookings and payments, overseeing staff activity, and performing cashing up and banking functions.
We are looking for someone with excellent customer care skills who enjoys helping people and is passionate about the role of libraries in providing opportunities for our community. You should have experience in libraries or a similar customer-focused environment, a love of reading and discussing books, an interest in STEM and digital engagement, good literacy, numeracy and IT skills, experience running activities, and enjoy working with the public.
