About the Role
Be a leader in the UK’s most awarded Markets Service. With 22 national awards in just seven years, Hackney’s Markets, Shop Fronts & Street Trading Service is best-in-class and setting the standard. From Ridley Road to Broadway, our markets power local economies, cultural pride, and sustainable growth.
As a Senior Markets Service Officer, you will lead from the front, shaping the next chapter and making every trading day count. You will be on-site for the majority of your week, managing day-to-day market operations to ensure smooth running, excellent customer service, and high standards.
Your responsibilities will include coaching officers and crews to deliver confident, values-led service; supporting traders with licences, pitch support, queries and set-up; driving commercial growth by increasing occupancy and supporting new traders; monitoring compliance, resolving issues, and escalating enforcement where needed; leading income recovery by reducing arrears and supporting fair trading; and reporting defects, obstructions and urgent risks to protect the public realm.
You will represent Hackney to residents, businesses, and enforcement partners, playing a vital role in one of London’s most vibrant public-facing services.
This role blends commercial insight, service leadership, and public engagement, helping to shape an inclusive, safe, and sustainable future for trading across the borough.
Why This Role Matters
Hackney’s markets are more than places to shop — they are community hubs where small businesses grow and cultural identity thrives. This role ensures those values are protected every day.
Key projects you may contribute to include Hackney’s Zero Plastic Markets, Black History Month Markets, Youth Takeovers, seasonal events, trader recruitment campaigns, inclusive licensing initiatives, and emergency response and operational resilience during peak trading and events.
This is not a desk job. It is a role for people who love being out there, leading change where it matters most — in our streets, stalls, and communities.
