About the Role
We are seeking an organised and self-motivated Traffic Engineer to join our Streetworks Team based in Hackney Central on a 12-month fixed term contract or secondment opportunity. Reporting to the Senior Engineer, you will work within a busy and friendly team to ensure the Council’s obligations under the Road Traffic Regulation Act 1984, Traffic Management Act 2004, New Roads and Street Works Act 1991, and The London Permit Scheme are met efficiently and effectively. Your role will focus on reducing disruption to the public highway and supporting the Council’s network management duties.

Duties include managing the full lifecycle of Temporary Traffic Regulation Orders (TTROs), ensuring compliance with relevant legislation and internal procedures. You will assess and approve applications, review traffic management plans, and coordinate with stakeholders such as utility companies, contractors, emergency services, and internal departments. Monitoring active TTROs to ensure safety and compliance, resolving operational issues, and conducting site inspections will also be key responsibilities.

As a senior technical lead, you will provide expert advice on traffic regulation matters, mentor junior staff, and support continuous service improvements. You will contribute to process development including digitisation initiatives and produce reports on TTRO activity and performance. The role may also require supporting emergency works or out-of-hours incidents to ensure rapid and effective traffic management.

Hackney Council is one of the UK’s highest performing local authorities, serving a vibrant and diverse community. We are proud of our achievements and committed to creating a workplace where staff are valued, included, and empowered to deliver excellent services.
