About the Role
Join the London Borough of Newham, a dynamic and rapidly evolving borough at the heart of some of Europe's most exciting regeneration projects, including the Royal Docks and Stratford. This role offers the opportunity to contribute to the delivery of an efficient and effective Development Management service, engaging with developers and key stakeholders to enable quality developments within a robust planning policy framework.
As a Planner / Senior Planner, you will take ownership of the full application process from pre-application discussions, through to application management, presenting at committee, conditions discharge, and defending the Council at appeals if necessary.
Newham is committed to ambitious corporate strategies including a climate emergency declaration aiming for carbon neutrality by 2030 and carbon zero by 2050, alongside a Community Wealth Building approach to ensure inclusive economic growth. The Planning & Development Service is responsible for delivering approximately 2,800 new homes annually, managing 31 Strategic Sites, an Enterprise Zone, Opportunity Area Planning Framework, and major infrastructure projects.
This role offers career-defining opportunities to work at pace and scale, with investment in new ICT to support flexible and remote working, bringing you closer to the communities served.
Experience
We welcome applications from both newly graduated planners and those with experience handling a variety of planning applications and appeals. Experience in negotiating outcomes with residents and developers and managing complex caseloads is advantageous.
About you
You will be self-motivated, enthusiastic, and able to work collaboratively within a team. You should be confident in understanding and applying planning legislation and policy at national and regional levels, managing projects independently and as part of a team, and providing clear technical and procedural advice.
You must be solutions-focused, flexible, and able to adapt to meet the evolving needs of the service while supporting colleagues in their work.
Qualifications
Relevant planning qualifications are expected. Candidates should be able to demonstrate how they meet the person specification through a supporting statement outlining specific examples of their skills and experience.
